50th Anniversary: Muegge
Donald and Martha (Throener) Muegge celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on January 11, 2021.
They were united in marriage on January 11, 1971 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Plainview.
In November of 1977, they had their only daughter (who despite a wonderful upbringing, has lacked punctuality in celebrating her parents amazing milestone.)

At last week’s wrestling tournament, Plainview Pirate Scout Ashburn earned his 100th win of his career for the Pirate wrestling team. “For a wrestler to gain 100 wins this fast into the Junior year is a great accomplishment,” said Coach Chad Schumacher. “Scout has been a terrific wrestler with great technique. He is constantly looking to improve himself and through others on the team. He is following the line of many great Plainview wrestlers through the years.”

Wrestling team second at EPPJ invite

FFA drive collects 70 blankets
Every Christmas, Zion Lutheran School students give to a local charity, and this year they chose to help the Plainview FFA gather blankets for the organization’s blanket drive for those in need. The school youth put together around 20 blankets, most of which were donated to the Manor residents. Plainview’s FFA officers pictured with the blankets donated by the community to give to Manor residents and school families in need this Christmas season. All in all the group collected 70 blankets from donations from the community.

K-9 unit "tours" school
Plainview Public Schools held a “lockout” in the high school building last week with State Trooper Cockle and Trooper “Cole” swept the building for any controlled substances.
In an all-call to the parents the school reported the “lockout” was a non-medical emergency situation where all students are contained in classrooms and individual classroom doors are locked. No one is allowed in the building.
The “lockout” was to facilitate the Nebraska State Patrol and “Trooper Cole,” a trained drug detecting dog.
Superintendent Dr. Darron Arlt said he was “happy to report that Cole found nothing suspicious,” and that “if students know that at any time we may bring Cole back, that will almost certainly be enough of a deterrent to bringing into our building any controlled substance.”

American Legion Auxiliary Calendars

Public school moves to Chromebooks

Margaret Shoemaker of Cedar Rapids, being the artistic person that she is, painted a large buzz saw blade and delivered it to her brother, Jim Mullins of Plainview. Mullins had purchased two buzz saws at a farm auction and had asked his sister to paint on them. She started this one the end of March and finished it on November 20th. Many hours went into painting. Some parts were done, and redone, until she was okay with the results. Five coats of clear acrylic spray and then a coat of resin. For the most part Shoemaker said she enjoyed the process and made sure it was something that her brother would really like and enjoy.

Plainview Family Pharmacy takes Traveling Trophy
The community of Plainview played host to a number of events during this past weekend's Hometown Holidays on December 12. The culmination of the day was the annual Christmas Parade of Lights and the traveling trophy went to Plainview Family Pharmacy this year. Wedding Anniversary: Boschult
Family of David and Roxie (DePeel) Boschult have requested a card shower in honor of their 45th wedding anniversary.
The couple’s family includes: Angie and Daniel Brady of Columbia, Tenn. and Christina and Nathan Voss of Spring Hill, Tenn., and six grandchildren.
They were married at the Brunswick Community Church on December 28, 1975.

Michael Foods donates to Senior Center...
The Plainview Social Center recently received a Christmas present from Michael Foods in Plainview/Bloomfield. The donation was made to help sponsor the senior food program at the center. The check was presented by Mitch Todd and representatives of Michael Foods, and donated to Manager Diane Elwood of the Plainview Social Center.

Wrestling team earns first win of the season

This is the first year high school bowling has been a part of the Nebraska School Activities Association as an "official" high school sponsored season sport. The Plainview Social Center has their annual Angel Tree up at the Center.
This tree is put up each year as a memorial tree in honor of loved ones that have passed away, or can be donated to a very special person. Each year, family members or friends donate money to the Center in honor of their loved ones.
An angel is then placed on the tree at the Center in memory of those loved ones.
At the end of the Christmas Season when the tree is taken down, the angel is then given to the donor.
“This is a great way to remember and honor your loved ones,” said Manager Diane Elwood. “If you are wanting to donate, please bring your donations in to the Center, or send them to P.O. Box 206.”

The Plainview Health Board agreed at a recent meeting to encourage a recommended policy for all local business owners to ask patrons to wear a mask while in their business.
Signs were created for business owners to hang in their establishments to encourage the recommendation, and while it is just a recommendation, the Board hopes locals will participate in wearing masks to help slow the spread of Covid-19 locally. Any business owner that might not be able to print the sign can pick one up at the City Offices if they wish to participate.

LENRD approved new irrigated acres and groundwater allocations

In 2001, one of Horst's granddaughter's was crowned Homecoming Queen. In 2020, Horst's other granddaughter was crowned Homecoming Queen. Aaron and Markie Stech of Plainview have announced the birth of a new son, Ryker Kale, born to them on October 27, 2020 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.
He weighed 8 lbs., 12 oz., was 21.5 inches long, and was welcomed home by two-year-old twin brothers, Rexin and Riggs.
Grandparents are Ronnie and Lynn Christiansen, and the late Lisa Christiansen, of Plainview, and Ronald and Terri Stech of Osmond. Great-grandparents are Edwin and Joy Christiansen; Sandra Cumming, and the late James Cumming; and Gerald Hoffart and the late Shirley Hoffart, all of Plainview; and the late Edwin and Bernadine Stech and Dwain and Evaline Hoeppner, all of Osmond.

Official results show large voter turnout

Eichberger confirmed
Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Plainview held its confirmation on October 25, with one youth honored during the service.
Kaiden Richard Eichberger, son of Roger and Stephanie Eichberger of Plainview, received confirmation with Pastor Donna Fonner.
His sponsors were Mike and Lisa Ross of Pierce and Eric and Tammy Newland of New Braunfels, Texas.
Eichberger’s family attended the service, and dinner followed at Mary’s Restaurant.
Special guests were his siblings: Kaleb, Karissa and Keaton; and his grandparents, Evelyn Eichberger and Richard and Cheryln Hillrichs, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Two standout wrestlers, one from UNL and the other from Iowa Western, died in a fiery crash early Thursday in central Lincoln.

Zoning Board hears TC Energy changes for special use permit
The Plainview Zoning Board met for their regular meeting on October 26th. Halloween came and went with a large crowd of youngsters and not-so-youngsters parading at the Plainview Manor, Plainview Schools and then visiting downtown businesses to “trick or treat” on Friday, prior to Saturday’s main evening event around town. Costumed youth and young-at-heart numbered near 200 in downtown Plainview on Friday, a larger crowd drawn by the unusually warm October 30th weather. Jim Gould named Star Ambassador
Jim Gould of Plainview received the Star Ambassador Award for his dedication and support of the Plainview Farmers Market this season. Gould attended the market each week and made it a point to visit with all the vendors and the customers making everyone feel special. Because of the goodwill that he brought to the market every week, he was recognized with this award.

Pirates win NSAA recognition
The Nebraska School Activities Association released its first season's "Believers and Achievers" student awardees, including three youth from Plainview Public Schools.
Seniors Riley Kaup, Colton Choat, and Brooklyn Kumm were named to the NSAA program this first release.
Students are required to be a part of an NSAA activity or athletic event, be involved in their local school and community and complete a citizenship essay to complete their application. Local schools nominate eligible students.
Only 48 seniors will be selected statewide for the 2020-21 school year.

Chamber, Manor planning trick or treat events for Friday, Oct. 30

Fire week noted at Zion...
On Wednesday, students at Zion Lutheran School in grades Preschool through Second grade were visited by firefighter Brian Bowman. He showed them his truck and explained fire safety and equipment firefighters use to help keep the community safe. Students are taught by Cindy Meyer and Krista Masat. Venteicher wins Caring Kind Award for 2020
Kaylyn Venteicher, CHI Health Plainview, was recently awarded as the organization's 2020 Caring Kind recipient. For near 40 years, "The Caring Kind" award has been given to Nebraska's most caring and compassionate hospital employees. The award honors outstanding health care employees who have demonstrated compassion for patients, cooperation with co-workers, and dedication to excellence in their job responsibilities.

Williams New Arrival
Seth and Jocelyn Williams are parents to a new son, Wiley Dale Anson Williams, born on September 4, 2020 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.
He was born at 9:45 a.m., weighing 8 pounds,13.5 ounces and was 21.5 inches long.
He was welcomed homed by two sisters, Quinn and Reece.
Grandparents are Les and Jill Anson of Brunswick and Scott and Dawn Williams of Plainview.
Great-grandparents are Lumer "John" and Glee Bartak of Plainview, the late Darrell and Iona Anson of Brunswick, Kenneth and Darlene Stelling of Plainview and Norma and the late L.D. "Mugg" Williams of Mooresville, Indiana.

Pierce County wins USDA rural grant for entrepreneurs and agricultural growth
United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Bette Brand recently announced that USDA has signed cooperative agreements with five organizations to support placemaking technical assistance throughout the United States. Eichberger family hosts 5K walk/run for MMR Foundation
Saturday, October 10th, the Eichberger family hosted a 5K Walk/Run fundraiser event to raise money for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation for team "Fight For Ike" in honor of Randy Eichberger.
The route took participants past Randy and Alene Eichberger’s home south of Plainview, so he could see all the love and support as they passed by with waves and well wishes.
With all the love and support, "Fight for Ike" raised $2,530 for the foundation. The MMRF has been the source of many new treatment advances for multiple myeloma patients and is very hopeful to soon find a cure.
“Our family is forever grateful for the research foundation and we are so proud to have helped donate to finding a cure,” said the Eichbergers.

Gerdes memorial tournament held
The Fourth Annual Brandon Gerdes Memorial Trap Shoot was held on Saturday, September 26, 2020 after being postponed due to the pandemic. The 72 shooters gathered again at the Northeast Nebraska Shooting Association for the competition. Brian Bowman and Kris Mann from the Plainview Fire Department brought a fire truck to the library to represent Fire Prevention Week. Plainview Manor residents back home after COVID outbreak
The Plainview Whispering Pines Assisted Living has 10 residents living in the facility. On September 8, one of the resident's tested positive for the Coronavirus. Since testing positive, the resident has been moved from their room and is no longer in the facility. The other residents are remaining in isolation and were tested for the virus with the results coming back negative. Council approves budget for 2020-2021 fiscal year
City council members approved the city budget and tax request for the 2020-2021 fiscal year during their meeting on September 14th at 6:30 p.m. at the city library. The council also approved two other pieces of business, the first being a wage increase for Interim Police Chief Jerry Newumann for his additional responsibilities, and the hiring of a maintenance worker for the city. Nelson retires from Air Force after 20 years of service
Jarrod Nelson graduated from Plainview Public Schools in May of 2000. During spring semester of his senior year, Nelson enlisted in the Military in February and left for basic training in August. Boyer receiving cancer treatment in Omaha
Word was received last week that longtime Plainview resident, teacher, and Pirate wrestling head coach Dean Boyer had been suddenly diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia-Subtype M5, and has begun receiving treatment at the Buffett Cancer Center in Omaha. Masks required for return to school
The Plainview Board of Education voted affirmatively on Monday evening to require staff and students to wear masks when they come back to school on Thursday, August 27. City, CHI host picnic in park
In lieu of the Klown Festival this year, CHI Health Plainview Hospital staff and the City of Plainview staff hosted a free barbecue in the park in an August 8 event. The Klown Festival festivities were canceled because of COVID-19 concerns in June, but with some social distancing, and some masks and gloves, members of the community were still able to celebrate unity in a small way this year. Troy Johnston cooked hot dogs and Curt Hart grilled hamburgers with a host of hospital and city staff helping serve and even provide curb-side pickup of the meals.

Frontier Insurance hosts Plainview FFA...
Staff at Frontier Insurance in downtown Plainview played host to a group of Plainview FFA youth to a local field plot for some hands-on learning prior to the school year. With the help of an adjuster, the staff helped the kids review staging and the wind/hail damage that has been in the area. The youth learned about lodging, green snap, hail, cut offs and defoliation. They also split into pairs and counted their own percentage of loss and payable losses. Another trip had been planned as well, for the youth to review appraisals, bin measurements and possible harvest losses.

IRS.gov for federal payments
The Internal Revenue Service continues to look for ways to help people who were unable to provide their information in time to receive Economic Impact Payments for their children. As part of that effort, the Internal Revenue Service announced it will reopen the registration period for federal beneficiaries who didn't receive $500 per child payments earlier this year. Dusting off their “old” and squeezing into their “used-to’s” the dads, coaches and “older” Plainview baseball players gathered their gear for a game against the Plainview Junior’s squad last week. When the dust had settled, the “old guys” had won over their younger counterparts on the Junior Legion team, 12-10.

10U girls softball closes winning season
The Plainview Lady Pirate 10-and-under girls softball team drew their shortened season to a close in July, with a total record of 6-3. “The girls played some very good softball this year, while learning to pitch,” said Coach Blake Nincehelser, “This group of girls have a very bright future in the game of softball.”

Mason honor 50-year member, Sirek
Members of the Plainview Masonic Lodge No. 204 recently traveled to Orchard to present a 50-year-membership pin and certificate to Hoyt Sirek.
Sirek joined the Masonic Lodge in Orchard on March 12, 1970. Brother Gale Retzlaff, Plainview Lodge #204 Worshipful Master, presented the award.
Brother Sirek became a member of Plainview Lodge #204 from the consolidation of lodges in 2018.

NECC to require masks in session
Northeast Community College continues to put plans into place to begin the fall semester on August 17. Darnall on National Champ team
The Norfolk Golden Girls team, coached by Andy Severance, Jim Wichman and Jim Vrbsky, came out as Champions at the 2020 Girls Class B 14 & Under Northern Nationals Tournament. Eastern Star award presented
Members of Mt. Vernon Chapter #84, Order of Eastern Star, traveled to Orchard to present 50 year pins to Hoyt and Arlene Sirek.
They joined Eastern Star at Orchard, July 16, 1970. Nebraska Grand Chapter issued the pins and certificates. They were presented by Joan Alexander, Worthy Matron and Gale Retzlaff, Worthy Patron.
Arlene Sirek served as Worthy Matron of Sunset Chapter #300, five times and held multiple offices at the local level. She served as a District Grand Supervisor and a Grand Representative to Iowa.
Hoyt Sirek held the office of Sentinel for a number of years.
Both are members of Mt. Vernon from the consolidation of Chapters in 2018.

Baileyz BBQ business purchased by Laurel restaurant owners
Longtime Plaiview residents, Dale and Cheryl Bailey, first started selling Baileyz BBQ sauce at Bailey's Drive Inn back in 1999. Brozeks compete "in tandem"

Highway 81 work scheduled
Weather permitting, the railroad crossing on US-81 located just north of the US-20 junction will be closed beginning at 8:00 a.m. on May 27 for approximately one week to allow for replacement, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Traffic will be detoured utilizing US-20, N-121, and N-59

Highway closed near Laurel

Parks now open, Pool to be determined
The Plainview City offices closed Chilvers Park and Band Shell Park on April 2. On May 11, the parks re-opened, but at your own risk. The city is not going to sanitize the equipment. Plainview City Council members will discuss the swimming pool at the June council meeting on June 9.

The Class of 2020 was featured with a special parade on Saturday evening, May 16, culminated by some fireworks at the Plainview football field with parents along the parade route and in their vehicles during the fireworks. A regular ceremony has been planned for July 11, assuming that the DHM restrictions will be lifted by then. A digital graduation ceremony was posted on the school's YouTube channel with seniors crossing the stage in caps and gowns to receive their diplomas "on time." The NSAA Membership voted 31 to 20 FOR adding Bowling as a sanctioned NSAA activity.
The NSAA Membership voted 28 to 23 AGAINST adding Girls Wrestling as a sanctioned NSAA activity. The NSAA Board of Directors voted 7 to 1 to add Girls Wrestling as an EMERGING sport.

All Class Reunion canceled to 2021
The 2020 Plainview All Class Banquet has been canceled for this summer, and rescheduled for June 5, 2021 with the classes of 1970 and 1971 both being honored as the "50 Year" classes.
Organizers considered moving the event, but too many of the honored classes were unable to meet, or canceled as well.

Legion Auxiliary names essay contest winners

The Pierce County Economic Development card allows for customers to patronize businesses that serve food, cross off what they've order (with receipt as proof) and once the card has been blacked out, they can be entered into a drawing. North Central District Health Department (NCDHD) was made aware of the first positive COVID-19 case in Pierce County. NCDHD has initiated contact investigations and have been rapidly assessing potential exposures to determine next steps. At this time, NCDHD believes this case is contained. NCDHD has been in communications with all identified close contacts and they are in self-quarantine (staying home) and will be actively monitored twice daily by public health officials. Additional details on the case will be shared as they are acquired.
