The Warriors practice handoffs in the parking lot to avoid the muddy track

The Crofton Warriors track team, who had nine state qualifiers last year, is preparing for the upcoming season.

They are hoping to send even more athletes to state this season. The Warriors started practice on Monday, February 27 and are working hard to get better every day. Senior Wesley Lucht stated, “I am looking forward to playing hacky sack and having a good time with the track team throughout the season.”

The Warriors graduated six seniors from last year's team, three of them being state qualifiers. The boys are led by seniors Wesley Lucht, Simon McFarland, and Trevor Sejnoha. The girls team will also benefit from the leadership of Blair Jordan and Fiene Adler, who are both new to Warriors Track and Field.

Coach Doerr is looking forward to this year as the head coach of the girls and boys track team. He said that the sky's the limit for both squads and that there is good competition all over the class for both teams. Doerr stated, “We have a large number of girls this year and I hope we can fill the gaps from last year and propel them to a successful season.” The boys also have more athletes than last year and he believes they can achieve higher placements and break their personal best from last year.

The Warriors had six state qualifiers from last year that are returning to the program and are also hoping to return to state: juniors  Jordyn Arens, Elizabeth Wortmann, Kaylee Mauch, Caitlin Guenther, and Ellie Tramp’ and Sophomore Rylie Arens. R.Arens stated, “I hope to improve every day and improve my personal best and strive to be the best athlete I can be.”

According to Doerr, the team needs to improve in their technical and event-specific work, despite the lack of the facilities available. Even though the season just got started,Doerr has seen improvements from the athletes each day of practice. His overall goal for the season is to put the athletes in the best possible position to succeed in their events.

The Warriors will compete in their first track meet on Thursday, March 23 at the Mount Marty Fieldhouse at 11:00 a.m.
