Paralleling the concept of the free library boxes in downtown Crofton, the city now has a community food pantry box located on Iowa Street between the City Auditorium and the Fire and Rescue Hall.
At the time of this writing, the person(s), agency or organization who placed the box remains unknown, but the purpose is to make it easy for persons in the community to donate and take food items as needed according to city employee Marlene Hynes.
Anyone who wishes may leave non-perishable food items in the box at any time. It’s recommended that in cold winter months donors should avoid leaving canned goods which could freeze. By the same token, flour and grain-based food items such as cereal and crackers should not be left when weather is very warm, as they may be a source of bugs. Also, food items should not be expired.
Crofton resident Laura Barger, a single mother, has been taking on the responsibility of replenishing the box as she is able and encouraging others to do the same. She points out that many local residents may not be able to drive to Bloomfield to pick up items at the Knox County Food Pantry. As SNAP benefits were reduced or discontinued for many, Barger recognized the need for an ongoing local source of food for those in need.
Anyone who wishes may take items from the box and it’s hoped that it will be a source of relief for anyone in need both during the holiday season and beyond.
Questions about food donations can be directed to the Crofton City Office.
