The Crofton Speech team traveled to Kearney and placed fourth with 68 points in the State C1 Speech Competition on March 17.
Head Coach Courtney Baker said, “There are a few things I hoped could have turned out differently, but at the end of the day each team member had to compete with the best of the best and everyone did very well.” Baker went on to say that placing fourth at the state competition is something to be very proud of.
Out of the 10 state qualifiers from Crofton seven medaled in the competition.
In Entertainment Speaking, senior Rowdy Hegge won silver. Hegge also received three 50s (perfect scores), one in finals.
Sophomore Elizabeth Wortmann earning four 50s, two which were in finals, came home with gold.
Crofton had the pleasure of walking away with places one and two in Entertainment Speaking. Wortmann said, “I was just excited to be down at State this year, much less win! I would also like to thank my speech team and my family who heard my speech a million times and helped me to perfect it.” She reminded people to be confident in their own abilities, and to constantly work on it because something like that doesn’t come overnight.
Senior Roy Knapp and freshman Jack Schieffer qualified for finals and pulled off a fifth place in Duet Acting with two 50s, one in finals. Knapp said, “It was a solid way to end the season, even though some things didn’t go our way.”
The Oral Interpretation of Drama group received two 50s, one in finals, and picked up a second place. The group consists of seniors Roy Knapp and Rowdy Hegge, juniors Rori Schmidt and Megan Tramp, and sophomore Kaylee Mauch.
Rori Schmidt said, “It was a fun experience, I mean obviously it is a big hurdle to jump over because it is State and it is big and scary. We didn’t get exactly what we wanted, but we still had a really great time and did really well. I am very proud of this team.”
