Funeral services for Ashleigh Wabasha, age 19, of Santee, were held Monday, April 25, 2022, at Oyate Oyanke Community Center in Santee. 

Terrance Medina officiated, and burial was in the Catholic Cemetery in Santee.
Ashleigh died Monday, April 18, 2022.

Ashleigh Mae Wabasha was born in Yankton, South Dakota on July 6, 2002, to Michelle Denney and DeWayne Wabasha. She lived in Santee with her family. 

She graduated from Marty Indian School and went on to college at Haskell Indian Nations University and Nebraska Indian Community College. She was majoring in business.

Her family remembered her with “Ashleigh was so full of life; she was willing to do anything for anyone. She appreciated life and what it gave to her. Ashleigh was an amazing, beautiful, and talented young lady. She truly was one of a kind. Also, she was very vibrant intuitive perceptive Dakota Wiyan’; she is who she is because of her, she developed herself into the individual she became….”

Wabasha had a lot of love for sports, especially basketball, it was her favorite sport, and she was lucky enough to travel all over the country to play the sport she loved. When she would travel to all these different places, she would make friends because she was so spontaneous. 

A lot of people liked that about her because there are not a lot of people like that; she was her true self around everyone. But what she loved the most though, was playing basketball with her siblings. They were her best friends; she did everything with them and for them.

She was preceded in death by, Weston Grant, Ronald Trudell, Clarence Thomas, Patrick Wabasha, Arthur Denney, Sr., and Mercedes Denney; and many grandmas, grandpas, aunties, uncles, and cousins.

Ashleigh Wabasha is survived by her parents, DeWayne Wabasha, 50, and Michelle Denney, 43; siblings, Tyral (Ronnette) Denney, 27, and kids of Santee, Winona (Josh Hoffman) Wabasha, 23, and kids of Santee, Dimitryus Wabasha, 20, of Santee, DaWayna Wabasha, 18, of Santee, Siemona Wabasha, 17, of Santee, Aleigha Wabasha, 16, of Santee, Hoksida Wabasha, 15, of Santee; many nieces and nephews, friends, and relatives.

Brockhaus Funeral Home in Niobrara, was in charge of arrangements.
