Senior Garret Buschkamp works to win his first ever tournament title against Cedar Catholic’s Cole Bensen.

Coming home with four champions, the Crofton-Bloomfield wrestlers placed second at the Battle Creek Varsity Invitational on Saturday, January 14. 

The C-B team put together 176.5 team points to trail just Battle Creek’s Braves (184.5 points) on the championship board. The next closest team was Yutan with 133 points, Elkhorn Valley in fourth with 123 points and Tekamah-Herman rounded out the top five.

The Crofton-Bloomfield wrestlers continue to thrive as the season continues. Senior leader Buschkamp said, “I think that we’re really picking up steam, and we’re only going to keep getting better.”

At weight class 113, Jarret Sauser scored 14 team points. After receiving a bye, Sauser lost his first match by fall against Madison’s Hugo Sanchez, resulting in receiving another bye. In the consolation bracket, Sauser picked up two wins with pins against Elkhorn Valley’s Daley Bearinger and Tekamah-Herman’s Ty Strode. Sauser placed fifth.

Robbie Fisher, wrestling at 120, scored 26 team points and went undefeated on the day. Fisher received a bye in round one. In rounds two and three, Fisher won by fall over Lutheran High Northeast’s Brenyn Ames and Battle Creek’s Zion Baier. In the championship bracket, Fisher picked up two more wins. He pinned Tekamah-Herman’s Jager Leichleiter, which sent him to the first place match. Fisher then won by a decision of 8-4 over Yutan’s Bryce Kolc. Fisher came home a champion. 

At weight class 126, Evan Hollander scored five team points. After receiving a bye in the first round, Hollander won by fall over Wiley Anderson from Battle Creek JV. In round three, Hollander lost by fall to Yutan’s Trev Arlt. In the consolation bracket, Hollander was defeated by Battle Creek’s Jaxson Hassler with the decision of 5-4. In the seventh place match, Hollander lost to Howells-Dodge’s Ethan Coufal with the decision of 9-7. Hollander placed eighth.
Tomik Duffy, wrestling at 132, scored two team points. In round one, Duffy was pinned by

Howells-Dodge’s Dylan Brichacek. Duffy received a bye in round two. In round three, Duffy lost by fall against Stanton’s Mason McKie. Duffy placed twelfth.

At weight class 138, Braeden Guenther scored 17 team points. In the first three rounds, Guenther picked up three wins by fall over Yutan’s Max Egr, Quad County Northeast’s Bryson Eledge, and Madison’s Eduardo Pedraza. In the championship bracket, Guenther lost with a decision of 6-1 against Elkhorn Valley’s Nathan Halsey. In the third place match, Guenther pinned Cedar Catholic’s Brady Hochstein. Guenther went home with a third place medal.

Wyatt Tramp, wrestling at 160, scored 24.5 team points and went undefeated on the day. After receiving a bye in the first round, Tramp picked up two wins in rounds two and three. Tramp won by tech fall over Summerland’s AJ Hobbs, and pinned Quad County Northeast’s Gage Jensen. In the championship bracket, Tramp won by a decision of 7-2 over Howells-Dodge’s Lane Belina. In the first place match, Tramp won by a major decision of 13-3 over Tekamah-Herman’s Alex Braniff. Tramp was declared a champion.

At weight class 170, Garret Buschkamp scored 20 team points and went unbeaten. Buschkamp won with a 10-3 decision over Ty Schroeder from Battle Creek JV. In round two, Buschkamp pinned Wakefield’s Ronnie Ramirez. With a 8-2 decision, Buschkamp defeated Tekamah-Herman’s Gabe Stock. In the championship bracket, he picked up two more wins by a 6-5 decision over Yutan’s Jett Arensberg and a 6-5 decision over Cedar Catholic’s Cole Bensen. Buschkamp placed first on the day.

Buschkamp‘s championship win was the first of this season and of his whole career. He stated, “I felt really good. It was my first individual tournament win ever, and it was pretty sweet. Of course I left points out there on the mat, but it’s nothing I can’t fix.”

Casey Jeannoutot, wrestling at 182, scored 13 team points. After receiving byes for the first two rounds, Jeannoutot won against Quad County Northeast’s Ajay Gubbels with a decision of 6-4. In the championship bracket, Jeannoutot was defeated by Yutan’s Derek Wacker by a major decision of 10-2. With a decision of 7-2 in the third place match, Jeannoutot defeated Battle Creek’s Brek Thompson. Jeannoutot received third place.

At weight class 195, Tyson Sanger scored 26 team points and went undefeated. In rounds one, two and three, Sanger won by falls over Cedar Catholic’s Nicholas Coleman, Winnebago’s Santonio Nieman, and Oakland-Craig’s Garrett Klausen. In the championship bracket, Sanger also pinned Osmond’s Carson Bolz. In the first place match, Sanger picked up his last win over Battle Creek’s Dahkota Zlomke with a decision of 7-5. Sanger came home with his first place medal.

Anthony Steffen also wrestled at weight class 195. In the first round, Steffen lost to Battle Creek’s Dahkota Zlomke by a 4-2 decision. In round two, Steffen was pinned by Osmond’s Carson Bolz. After receiving a bye in round three, Steffen battled back in the consolation bracket. He won his last two matches by falls over Winnebago’s Santonio Nieman and Cedar Catholic’s Nicholas Coleman. Steffen placed fifth on the day.

At weight class 220, Ty Tramp scored 17 team points. After receiving byes in rounds one and two, Tramp pinned Madison’s Gabe Casarrubias, moving him to the championship bracket. Tramp was then defeated by Oakland-Craig’s Dominick Richter with a 5-1 decision. In the third place match, Tramp won by fall over Riverside’s David Lozano. Tramp received his third place medal.

Owen Kuchar, wrestling at 285, scored 12 team points. In rounds one and two, Kuchar was pinned by Quad County Northeast’s Aiden Gubbels and Oakland-Craig’s JT Brands. Kuchar received byes in the next two rounds. In his last match, Kuchar won by fall over Oakland-Craig’s Joey Riggle. Kuchar placed fifth on the day.

Overall, the team placed second out of 20 teams with 176.5 points scored.
