R. E. Loyd West is known as the founder, with his wife Theo, of West-Hodson Lumber and Concrete Company. Before he owned and operated a lumber yard, West served with distinction as a telephone lineman with the Second Division in numerous battles in France in World War I. He earned the Silver Star and a citation from the people of France for his gallantry under fire.
