Ashlyn Forbes, daughter of Garrett and Melissa Forbes, and Josie Choat, daughter of Dean and Sally Jo Choat, have been selected as delegates for the 2026 session of American Legion Auxiliary Cornhuskers Girls State to be held in Lincoln on May 31-June 6th, 2026.
The nonpartisan political program teaches students about local, county and state government.
Ashlyn and Josie, juniors at Plainview High School, were selected to attend ALA Girls State based on their academic achievements and involvement in their school and community.
The American Legion Auxiliary, founded in 1919, is a community of volunteers serving veterans, military and their families.
In addition to serving the military community, the Auxiliary hosts Girls Nation and the Girls State programs that teach future leaders about government and civic responsibility.
The Girls State attendees organize themselves into two mock political parties. The students then campaign, hold rallies, debate and ultimately vote to select city, county and state officials.
Once elected to office, delegates are sworn in and perform their prescribed duties. Two outstanding citizens from each Girls State program are selected to represent their respective states at Girls Nation in Washington, D.C. in July.
